Radiooncology and radiotherapy

As one of the most important pillars of effective tumour treatment alongside surgery and systemic therapy, we in radiation oncology are aware of our responsibility towards our patients. That is why our daily work is characterised by passion, empathy and expertise. With the help of modern medical technology and many years of experience, we primarily treat special benign and malignant tumours as part of targeted radiotherapy. The interplay of state-of-the-art technology and skilful handling offers a precision that makes this treatment particularly gentle and efficient.

The best treatment for each patient results from a precise analysis of the findings, the patient’s health condition and individual expectations. Our patients usually require a combination of different therapeutic approaches, which together can develop their full healing potential. This is why we agree a comprehensive therapy concept for each individual case, which we put into practice with the help of the experience and expertise of our interdisciplinary team and state-of-the-art technology.

Typical clinical pictures in radiation oncology and radiotherapy

At the WEGE KLINIK, we treat all benign and malignant tumours as well as metastases, depending on their severity, with the aim of complete healing or the prevention or containment of symptoms.

For example, we deal with:

Prostate cancer

Breast cancer

Gynaecological tumours (pelvis)

Lung cancer

Oesophageal cancer

Bowel cancer

Head and neck tumours

Skin cancer

Brain tumours

Metastases

Benign diseases and tumours in the brain, such as meningiomas, neurinomas, pituitary adenomas, vascular malformations (angiomas, cavernomas) or functional disorders (e.g. epilepsy, trigeminal neuralgia) as well as degenerative inflammatory (e.g. arthrosis) and hyperproliferative diseases are also typical clinical pictures.

If you have any doubt, please don´t hesitate to contact us.

Our treatment methods

3D radiation planning, intensity-modulated and volume-modulated radiotherapy

The basis for most radiotherapy treatments is 3D radiotherapy planning, which is based on the individual anatomy of the patient, the target tissue and the normal tissue. The radiation is focussed in the target tissue using lead lamellae that delimit the beam and various irradiation directions. Special complex techniques are used here, whereby the lead plates move during the radiotherapy (intensity-modulated radiotherapy) and the radiator head often rotates around the patient at the same time (volume-modulated radiotherapy).

Stereotactic radiotherapy, radiosurgery

Stereotaxy enables very precise irradiation of the affected areas of the body, so that as little healthy tissue as possible is affected by the radiation. To ensure this precision, the presentation of the target tissue, usually a tumour, on the radiation table and the technique of radiation application are essential. The high dose of radiotherapy ensures effective treatment in just a few sessions. Ideal for treating smaller tumours throughout the body.

In addition, the WEGE KLINIK uses an innovative combination of a positioning tool and a linear accelerator. This unique solution enables precise positioning of the beams and patient monitoring in the sub-millimetre range. This protects healthy lung tissue and the heart in the chest, bowel and bladder in prostate treatments and, of course, vital functional areas in the brain when irradiating brain tumours

Radiosurgery refers to stereotactic high-precision radiotherapy in a single, high-dose session. It is mainly used for tumours in the brain (metastases, acoustic neuroma, meningioma, pituitary adenoma). The advantage: compared to conventional surgery or operation, it is not an invasive procedure, which means that significantly fewer side effects can be expected.

Brachytherapy

In contrast to external radiation therapy, brachytherapy involves introducing a radioactive radiation source into the body – usually into the tumour region. In this way, a highly precise application is possible, which enables irradiation with a particularly high dose and particularly good protection of the surrounding tissue. This significantly increases the effectiveness of the therapy while minimising side effects. Brachytherapy is often used for prostate cancer and gynaecological tumours in particular due to its advantages and significantly increases the chances of recovery.

How your treatment works

Step 1: Your first visit to our clinic

If you have already been diagnosed with a tumour or a benign disease that is potentially suitable for radiotherapy, our experts will discuss the best therapy for your individual clinical picture.

So that we can prepare perfectly for this consultation, we would like to ask you to bring all documents from previous examinations with you to your first appointment. You will then receive a detailed schedule from us:

  • What do you need to prepare?
  • How will the treatment proceed?
  • What accompanying treatments are planned?
  • What side effects could occur?
  • How is monitoring carried out after therapy?

Step 2: Planning your therapy

In many cases, we first carry out a computerised tomography (CT) scan to determine precisely which areas of your body need to be irradiated. Together with other diagnostic images, e.g. magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and/or positron emission tomography (PET), our team can draw up a treatment plan for you. We will also clarify whether outpatient or inpatient treatment makes sense for you.

Step 3: The radiotherapy sessions

Depending on the case, treatment can take place in a single session, in a few sessions or over several weeks with up to five sessions per week. The treatment usually lasts around 10 minutes, although the actual radiotherapy is significantly shorter. After the last appointment at the latest, we will discuss the subsequent planned check-up.

 Step 4: Aftercare

You will usually be asked to visit the clinic again after around 6 – 8 weeks. The further follow-up intervals and responsibilities depend on the type of illness and the specialists involved in your care. In the case of oncological diseases, we pay particular attention at these appointments to the absence of tumours or tumour control in the body, potential consequences for healthy tissue and possible psychological, physical and social difficulties. We discuss possible therapies or behavioural measures together, for example to alleviate symptoms or effectively prevent a recurrence of the disease.

The philosophy behind our daily work, is behind our name WEGE:
